Films, TV, Books, Stuff
Ting Tong
Very briefly: I just got back from seeing King Kong, in the "delux" screen at Burton Cineworld.
The screen had its own bar and toilets. How cool is that?
Oh... the film... I wasn't THAT bothered about seeing it, but... it was absolutely amazing. Talk about intense! Woah! Incredible. And other superlatives.
I think it will be a long time before anyone attempts another monster movie, because they'll have a really hard time topping this...

If you must write prose and poems, the words you use should be your own...
I had my iPod on random the other day, and Placebo's version (some would say abomination, but I quite like it) of The Smiths' Bigmouth Strikes Again came on.
And that got me thinking... I wonder what other Smiths / Morrissey covers I could find on t'internet, by artists I actually like, that is. So I spent a few hours at the weekend, and another hour or so last night, and so far I have:-
- The Killers - Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself
- Coldplay - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
- Supergrass - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
- Muse - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want
- Cinerama - London
- The Beautiful South - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
- The Frank & Walters - Frankly Mr Shankly
- Divine Comedy - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
- Kirsty MacColl - You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby
- and... er... TaTu - How Soon Is Now? *cough*
Most of them were average, just trying to sound like the original (what's the point in that?) but top marks to Beautiful South, Muse, Cinerama and The Frank & Walters for really putting their own stamp on them.
I found a couple of other gems too, such as The Cure covering Depeche Mode, and Divine Comedy doing a Jacques Brel song.
Hmmm... I may have found myself a new obsession...
Does anybody have any particular favourite covers, out of interest?

I'm a leaf on the wind...
Finally got around to seeing Serenity tonight. Good timing too, as
looking at the cinema schedules, tomorrow is the last day for it at all
the Derby and Burton cinemas...

I held back seeing the film until I'd seen all the series... and what
can I say... I really really enjoyed it. Joss Whedon made a great job
of making a film that stands alone, but being familiar with the series
made it even better, particularly as you are more attached to the
characters (he says, trying not to give any plot twists away).
Anyway, rumour has it that it's out on Region 1 DVD in December...
And for those of you wondering what the hell I'm talking about, it's
based on a series that got cancelled before the first series had
finished showing. The easy way to describe it, would be 'adventures of
a Han Solo-type captain and his crew, in a sort of space western'. But
it's far better than that description.
I'd say 'go see it', but it looks like I may bee a bit late.

Arson About
Well, I've just got back in from taking three kids plus Mrs Kevling (of course) to see Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. We all really really enjoyed it...
I remember laughing out loud at some of the innuendoes that would have gone over the kiddies heads...
"Kiss my potato!" "Kiss my carrots!" "Kiss my ar...tichokes"
"Look at my wife's brassicas! They were ravaged during the night!"
"Caution: contains nuts" (definitely a visual gag that one)
I didn't the dogfighting scene, reminded me too much of Peanuts, and the 'insert coin' joke was more Looney Tunes than Aardman.
It was good to see the Wallace and Gromit world expanded even further than it was in A Close Shave...
Overall, though, it was 'cracking'!

Hot swap...
Has my gadget adoration gone one step too far?
Ladies and gentlemen, may I present the miracle of modern technology that is your "mug-warmer with built in 4 port USB".
PS I'd have given it a thorough testing, but as I might have guessed, my mug is too big...

Four and Twenty UPDATE
It wasn't on the downloaded 24 finale we watched, but after the end credits there was a voiceover that went:-
On the First Day, he saved a President. On the Second Day, a City On the Third Day, a Nation and on the Fourth Day, the World If you think you think you know what's coming next, YOU DON'T KNOW JACK. The 5th Season of 24 coming in January ... ON FOX
So I guess they are doing a new series... that will be weird.
