If you must write prose and poems, the words you use should be your own...

I had my iPod on random the other day, and Placebo's version (some would say abomination, but I quite like it) of The Smiths' Bigmouth Strikes Again came on.

And that got me thinking... I wonder what other Smiths / Morrissey covers I could find on t'internet, by artists I actually like, that is. So I spent a few hours at the weekend, and another hour or so last night, and so far I have:-

  • The Killers - Why Don't You Find Out For Yourself
  • Coldplay - Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before
  • Supergrass - Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
  • Muse - Please, Please, Please, Let Me Get What I Want
  • Cinerama - London
  • The Beautiful South - Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now
  • The Frank & Walters - Frankly Mr Shankly
  • Divine Comedy - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
  • Kirsty MacColl - You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby
  • and... er... TaTu - How Soon Is Now? *cough*

Most of them were average, just trying to sound like the original (what's the point in that?) but top marks to Beautiful South, Muse, Cinerama and The Frank & Walters for really putting their own stamp on them.

I found a couple of other gems too, such as The Cure covering Depeche Mode, and Divine Comedy doing a Jacques Brel song.

Hmmm... I may have found myself a new obsession...

Does anybody have any particular favourite covers, out of interest?

I'm rubbish at music. I heard the Rolling Stones' 'Start Me Up' for the first time in aaages this morning and loved it though.
Not that that's relevant.
*sigh*

Good work fella!

I really want to find the Divine Comedy doing QOTSA's "No one knows." They did it at Glastonbury live last year (including a tuba!) but I think they actually never recorded it. *sigh* Also the A-Team theme dance version that was on my favourite episode of 'Spaced', again I think they never recorded it (it's not on the Spaced soundtrack).

Without *really* thinking about it:
Marilyn Manson's cover of NIN's "Terrible Lie"
U2's cover of "Everlasting Love"
The Isley Brothers' version of "Summer Breeze"

(25.11.05 16:01)
er..All Along the Watchtower by Jimi Hendrix must be just about the best cover I can think of. Suede once did a version of Brass in Pocket which was pretty good.

The Divine Comedy cover isn't brilliant - doesn't suit Neil's voice, that one.

The Supergrass one is ace.

The Coldplay/Killers/Muse abominations don't even bear thinking about...

(26.11.05 19:36)
Oh, and the Tatu one is pretty good, to be fair.

(26.11.05 22:44)
imagine-a perfect circle,more moody than lennon's version
land of confusion- disturbed, far better than the mono-toned phil collins version

(26.11.05 22:54)
cure-creep radiohead cover/ maggies farm - richie havens dylan cover ruby tuesday -melaney safka-stones cover, working class hero-marian faithful-lennon cover,to old fuckers like me there thousands of good covers, but more shit ones

I like the Psychedelic Furs version of the rather banal Smiths' song called...bugger, cannot remember. The furs version comes over the opening credits to 'Charmed'- the TV prog about three witches who can only perform magic in skimpy clothing - apparently. In fact, it may be the skimpy clothing that I like, as much as the song. Mmmmm...

(27.11.05 20:16)
Cordury's version of Motorhead. Brilliant.

Wow! Some good un's here...
NewMalden - agree with you about Tatu. I think. Not a fan of the Coldplay or Killers ones, both very insipid. I do like Muse though, and at least they've made the effort to not make it sound like the original - there's absolutely no point in covers like that. My favourite is the Beautiful South one though!
Steve54 - I'll have to track down the Cure / Radiohead one.
1IPD - I know the one you mean. I think. Is it How Soon is Now?
Cha0tic - interesting!
And having my iPod on random again this weekend, I've come across Marion's version of Psycho Killer, and The Wedding Present's It's Not Unusual.
And Graveland by 'The King', an Elvis impersonator covering songs by dead singers, so you get Love Will Tear Us Apart in an Elvis stylee. Great stuff!

The cover versions of Shatner & Nimoy are somewhat special as well.

The evolution of technology has brought about the development of scarpe Hogan shoes in not only the performance, but the aesthetic as well. From a single model in the past, hogan donna are now manufactured in variety to suit the changing needs and lifestyles of people. Since Hogan uomo is integrated with shock-absorbent materials, motion-control devices as well as different designs which suit different shapes of the feet, grabbing a great performance yet stylish Hogan scarpe uomo shoes would less likely be a troublesome task any longer.
